An automotive manufacturing complex built in 1962 that has operated as General Motors' plant, a joint venture with Toyota, and since October 2010 as Tesla's primary factory.
The Fremont manufacturing facility began operations in 1962 as General Motors' Fremont Assembly plant, producing full-size automobiles. From 1984 to 2009, the site operated as a joint venture between GM and Toyota known as NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.), which was considered one of the most efficient automotive plants in North America. When General Motors filed for bankruptcy in 2009, Toyota sought a buyer for the facility.
Tesla negotiated the acquisition of 210 of the 370 acres in October 2010 and began operations on October 27, 2010. The transaction was favorable for both parties: Tesla purchased the land for $42 million, significantly under market value, and Toyota purchased $50 million in Tesla stock during Tesla's IPO while partnering on electric vehicle development. By 2023, the factory employed over 20,000 people and produced nearly 560,000 vehicles, manufacturing the Model 3, Model Y, and Optimus robots. The facility has an annual production capacity of up to 100,000 Model S and X vehicles and 550,000 Model 3 and Y vehicles.
